Zora Neale Hurston was an author, anthropologist and folklorist who became an important figure of the Harlem Renaissance. She was from the South originally, having been born in Alabama and raised in Florida. She was among the writers in the Federal Writers' Project who interviewed formerly enslaved people in Florida in the 1930s. She also did extensive research and writing about religion and folk tales in the Gulf South and Caribbean.
