INDIGEAUX Collection

in partnership with Iya Oriade Queen Leia Lewis and her exhibit: INDIGEAUX: Yes, Spirit. I'll Go...

The indigo plant has been cultivated and used as dye for centuries in West Africa, and Europeans exploited this fact to establish indigo plantations in places like South Louisiana and the South Carolina Lowcountry. Whitney Plantation (then known as Habitation Haydel) began as an indigo plantation in 1752, before sugarcane became the primary crop. This collection celebrates West African dyeing techniques, spiritual practices, and the timeless beauty of indigo, in honor of the enslaved laborers who brought their skills and knowledge to the Americas.

All pieces by Queen Leia Lewis are titled INDIGEAUX. With every purchase, you support a living Black artist and become a part of Queen Leia's mission to reclaim the vital cultural heritage of indigo from Africa to the Americas.
