The seven candles of Kwanzaa, known as the mishumaa saba, are placed in a holder called a kinara and represent the seven principles of Kwanzaa. One black candle is in the center, with three red candles to its left and three green candles to its right. Each day, one candle is lit, starting with the black candle, to honor one of the principles.

  • Black candle: Represents the people and the principle of Umoja (Unity).
  • Three red candles (left): Represent the struggles that people face and the principles of Kujichagulia (Self-Determination), Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics), and Kuumba (Creativity).
  • Three green candles (right): Represent hope and the future, as well as the principles of Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility), Nia (Purpose), and Imani (Faith)
